The partners of Kaleidoscope Partnership Consultancy LLP have experience of corporate life and have survived at least two recessions.
We are perplexed organisations take on staff during the good times and then shed them when times get tough. It is not that which perplexes us but the speed at which it happens and the lack of understanding of the skills, knowledge and behaviours that are being lost.
Whilst we fully understand the need to reduce costs and people are expensive; to survive and grow an organisation needs people who know what to do, people who know how to do it and people with the skills, knowledge and will to do it. How many organisations are going to come out of this recession trying to compete in tomorrow’s world with yesterday’s skills and knowledge?
In shedding staff without clearly defining the competencies and behaviours required to survive and grow an organisation enters The Zone of Distortion.
The Zone of Distortion is where things go wrong. All organisations have a Zone of Distortion the smaller the Zone the more efficient and effective the organisation and the converse is true.
It is unlikely that one factor will be responsible for the distortion as it would probably have been acknowledged and rectified. A combination of factors is the most likely scenario which is why we are problem not solution focused. In our experience the more time and effort you spend defining the problem the more apparent the solutions become.
